Chapter 1

Files

If file names run rampant and empty folders are strewn across your project, chances are your artwork is similarly disorganized. Don’t overlook proper file management; it’s the best indicator that you’re on top of everything.

Consolidate Your PSDs

Don’t go Ctrl/Cmd+N happy: keep your designs to a minimal number of PSDs. i

Consolidate Your PSDs

Unless you have mammoth-sized files, using only a few (or one!) PSDs reduces confusion.

Name Files Appropriately

Wait, I’m confused. Should I use “NEWEST.psd” or “LATEST.psd”? How about “Final_v2.psd”? i

Ironically, absolutes like “Newest” and “Latest” are bound to have edits later. It’s best to just keep a general file name and use version control.

Store Assets Relative to PSD

Keep stock photos/icons in a folder close to the PSD, not in a desktop folder named “Misc stuff”. i

PSD inheritors shouldn’t have to go hunting to find original assets. Proximity is key to avoiding wasted time.

Make Your Files Easily Accessible to Teammates

Hate being asked where your artwork is? Work directly off a file share so people know to look before approaching you.

Choose a Convention and Stick to It

Pick an order. Use hyphens or underscores but not both. Never spaces. i

Follow a Convention

Following a naming convention, whatever you come up with, helps others scan directories easier.

Don’t Design to the Device

How convenient: Apple changed their device sizes. Again. Now your client-iPhone.psd is outdated. i

Don’t Design to the Device

Instead of creating documents that align to common device presets, allow your design to dictate breakpoints. Navigation getting squished? Time for a new artboard or canvas.
